Opium is extracted from the poppy flower. A cut is made in the flower through which the pulp comes out. It is then collected and pressed, and some of it is consumed directly as opium, while some is refined into heroin. The whole process is very labour-intensive, and opium production employs many people in Afghanistan. Photo: UN Photo/UNODC/Zalmai, 2005
